Day 11: Paradigm Shift

DISCLAIMER: THERE ISN'T ANYTHING MUCH WRITTEN IN THIS THAT YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW. INSTEAD OF WASTING THE NEXT 15 MINS OF YOUR LIFE, JUST GO ON WITH IT. WELL IN CASE YOU WANT TO WASTE IT ANYWAY, DO NOT READ ANYTHING IN BRACKETS OR IN RED TEXT, THAT'S A BIT OUT OF CONTEXT USUALLY MY MIND OFF RAMPING. IT WILL SAVE YOU SOME TIME TO DO MORE IMPORTANT THINGS. (SOMETIMES IT'S GENUINE LINKS TO ARTICLES WITH MORE INFO SO READ AND CLICK IT).

Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis observed a disturbing pattern at the Vienna General Hospital. Women in one maternity ward experienced significantly higher mortality rates compared to another ward. Despite extensive research into diet, living conditions, and even lunar cycles, the cause remained elusive. Then, a personal tragedy struck. A close friend, a fellow physician, succumbed to the same illness after a minor injury sustained during an autopsy.

Semmelweis, connecting the dots, hypothesised that doctors, after handling cadavers (dead people) , were unknowingly transmitting the disease to patients during childbirth (crazy). This radical idea was met with fierce opposition (of course). Colleagues dismissed his theory, accusing him of tarnishing the reputation of the medical profession. Despite the resistance and the personal cost, Semmelweis emphasised  the importance of washing hands with a chlorine solution. His work, though initially met with skepticism, laid the groundwork for germ theory and revolutionised medical practices, highlighting the importance of challenging established beliefs and embracing new evidence, even when faced with opposition.

That is a very crude example of a paradigm shift. Put in simple English a Paradigm shift is changing how you see things. And  Paradigm shifts aren’t just about grand scientific discoveries; they’re deeply personal. They happen when you suddenly realise the job you’ve been dragging yourself to isn’t a dead end it’s you who stopped exploring (not that I have anything against jobs or anything). Or when you finally understand that your struggles aren’t obstacles but signposts pointing to growth. Here's a sign post for you below.

Change Starts in the Mind

Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Let that sink in. Transformation begins where? In your mind (EXACTLY). A paradigm shift starts with challenging the mental models you’ve been handed or developed from sources around you whether by society, family, or your own fears.

That is surely not a bad thing because it is these mental models that help us survive. It would be a satis loss not having any fears because then we would intentionally put ourselves in harms way and get hurt. The problem starts when we start letting these mental mind maps abuse us and limit us from growing. Where they start convincing us and defining our suffering as patience and our ignorance as 'according to me'.

The Power of "What If?"

It is high time we start challenging some beliefs that are really weighing us down and limiting our potential. It all starts with a simple question: What if?

  • What if I’m not just stuck, but I’ve been planting my roots in the wrong soil?
  • What if my fear of failure isn’t protecting me, but suffocating me?
  • What if the life I want is on the other side of quitting my excuses (or my job, again nothing against jobs!)?

Leonardo da Vinci asked, What if humans could fly? The Wright brothers were like well, let's put them in the sky then!

Alexander Graham Bell: "What if you could hear someone's voice across miles?" Okay that's a crazy Mr Bell, then Boom, Phone! Ringing just like his surname.

And me? I’m here, asking what if this blog post could spark your next big idea, and nothing...LOL

Butterfly Effect: The power of small

The Butterfly Effect is a concept that illustrates how small, seemingly insignificant actions can ripple outward, triggering massive, unpredictable changes. It suggests that something as simple as the flap of a butterfly’s wings in one part of the world could, in theory, set off a chain of events that leads to a hurricane on the other side of the globe. This idea highlights the profound impact that even the smallest decisions or gestures can have on our lives, communities, and the world at large. For you, it starts by simple things like;

  1. Challenge your routines.
Wake up earlier like 8:30am or something, take a different route to work, or eat dinner (or supper depending on how deep your pockets are) in silence for once.

  2. Expose yourself to new ideas.
“If you want a new idea, read an old book” - Ivan Pavlov. Read a book outside your comfort zone. Watch a documentary on a topic you know nothing about. Listen to someone who disagrees with you.

  3. Ask better questions.
Instead of "Why does this always happen to me?" try "Why am I happening to this 😂?" Shift your perspective, and you shift your reality.

The Paradigm of the Creator

Here’s the real kicker: when you shift your mindset, you’re not just changing your world you’re participating in the divine act of creation. YES! I said it with the power vested in me by the Almighty God.

Once again remember, God didn’t just create the universe and step back. He invited us to co-create. That’s why we have art, music, literature, technology, bread, proof that humanity has been wielding its divine spark since day one (okay, day seven or eight, it's not quite clear in Genesis. I will go and read through it well and get myself a paradigm shift).

So whether your shift is about quitting that degree (nothing against degrees either), starting a business (it's tough there!), or simply reimagining challenges as opportunities, know this: the act of changing your perspective is an act of creation.

Your Paradigm Shift Starts Now

I’ll leave you with this: stop waiting for the "right time" or "perfect conditions." ( I mean you can if you want to) Start with the smallest shift you can master today. Because what if this moment, is your Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. Remember the world isn’t beige or grey. It’s every colour you allow yourself to see.

You need to Shift Something, because This is what we do Now.

Day 93: Peer Pressure

Let's talk about peer pressure, shall we? Not just the teenage "come on, have a ciggy behind the bike sheds" variety, but the subtle, grown-up version that's probably dictating more of your decisions than you'd care to admit. I read this book once, "Originals" by Adam Grant. Grant talks about how conformity is the enemy of originality. The moment you start fitting in, you stop standing out. There's this fascinating study that was done way back in the 1950s by a psychologist called Solomon Asch. He put people in a room and showed them lines of different lengths, then asked which lines matched. Easy peasy, right? But here's the twist, everyone else in the room was an actor instructed to give the wrong answer. And guess what happened? About 75% of participants went along with the obviously wrong answer at least once. Seventy-five percent! That's three out of four people willing to say that black is white just because everyone else is saying ...

Day 85: Spirit of Consistency

I saw a friend's post the other day and it read "Spirit of Consistency possess me". It got me thinking... Isn't it funny how we beg supernatural forces to take control of us? We're all just walking around, hoping some external power will suddenly make us do the things we already know we should be doing. Like, imagine a world where instead of praying for money, people just prayed to actually use their gym memberships. "Dear Lord, possess me with the spirit of actually showing up to that spinning class I've been paying for since January." But here's the thing, consistency isn't some mystical force that randomly chooses its victims. It's more like that friend who always shows up to help you move house. Not particularly exciting, definitely not glamorous, but bloody reliable. The Unsexy Superpower Consistency is probably the least sexy of all the success principles. It doesn't make for good Instagram content, does it? No one's posti...

Day 83: How to stay motivated

Let's be honest for a minute. Motivation is a fickle friend. It shows up all excited on January 1st, hanging around just long enough for you to buy expensive workout gear, some nice self help books, then disappears faster than free food at an event. The Bible puts it rather poetically in Proverbs 16:9: "In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD determines their steps." (NIV) Which sometimes feels like divine code for: "That brilliant five-year plan you made? Adorable. Now watch this plot twist." I remember reading somewhere that Thomas Edison failed more than 10,000 times before successfully inventing the light bulb. When asked about it, he supposedly said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." And I'm thinking... mate, after attempt 9,997, did you never just look at the bulb and say, "You know what? Candles aren't that bad. Fire is quite cosy, actually." The Mythical Well of Willpower ...
