Day 12: Butterfly Effect: The Power of Small

DISCLAIMER: THERE ISN'T ANYTHING MUCH WRITTEN IN THIS THAT YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW. INSTEAD OF WASTING THE NEXT 15 MINS OF YOUR LIFE, JUST GO ON WITH IT. WELL IN CASE YOU WANT TO WASTE IT ANYWAY, DO NOT READ ANYTHING IN BRACKETS OR IN RED TEXT, THAT'S A BIT OUT OF CONTEXT USUALLY MY MIND OFF RAMPING. IT WILL SAVE YOU SOME TIME TO DO MORE IMPORTANT THINGS. (SOMETIMES IT'S GENUINE LINKS TO ARTICLES WITH MORE INFO SO READ AND CLICK IT).

Imagine this: You wake up this morning, bright and early. You've got that killer playlist ready (I'm running with Blaq Diamond Inqola Album, it's hitting where it's supposed to hit), your coffee's brewing, and you're all set to conquer the day. You've got a meeting at 10 AM, a lunch date at 1 PM, and a gym session scheduled for 6 PM. Everything is meticulously planned, a symphony of productivity about to unfold.

Then, disaster strikes. You stub your toe on the edge of the bed, a searing pain shooting through your foot. Now, you're late for your meeting and you know it, you're limping, cursing under your breath, and your carefully constructed schedule is in shambles. In fact, your whole life is now going to be very miserable, you will die old, poor and alone with no one by your side.

Think about it. That stubbed toe might seem like a minor inconvenience, a fleeting moment of pain. But it could lead to a missed opportunity at work, leading to you getting fired then start being a drunkard, blow all your savings, sell your house and your car (if you have any). A canceled lunch date, (most probably with someone you were supposed to marry now you are just going to be a single absent father or neglectful mother...oooh I need to slow down a bit, sure it can't be that deep. A skipped workout, no longer in shape no money for gym unattractive chaos chaos). Anyways this domino effect can then influence your mood, your interactions with others, and ultimately, your overall well-being.

This, my friends, is a microcosm of the Butterfly Effect in action.

The Butterfly Effect, a concept born from chaos theory, suggests that even the smallest, seemingly insignificant actions can have a profound and unpredictable impact on the course of events. It's like that butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon, unknowingly setting off a chain reaction that eventually leads to a hurricane in Texas. (Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the picture).

But it's not just about the negative events, no. I mean it has been illustrated in most scenarios and circumstances as chaotic and associated with tragic events like the one above. But I want us to start associating it with a different perspective like the one below. A small act of kindness, a random conversation with a stranger, or a sudden burst of inspiration can also have a ripple effect, leading to unexpected and positive outcomes.

This concept is beautifully illustrated in the movie "Mr. Holland's Opus," where a seemingly insignificant decision to take on a part-time music teaching job ends up shaping Mr. Holland's entire life in profound and unexpected ways.

The beauty of the Butterfly Effect lies in its unpredictability. It reminds us that life is a series of interconnected events, where even the smallest actions can have far-reaching consequences. It encourages us to be mindful of our choices, to embrace spontaneity, and to appreciate the unexpected twists and turns that life throws our way. A mantra from my favourite morning meditation (it's on spotify remind me to link it in red text), "I am grateful for today, and all of the opportunities and challenges that it will throw my way". DONE!

Matthew 13:33 (NIV):
"The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough." The small intentional acts that we can decide to do can have a long lasting and impactful role in the turnout of our immediate future.

So, how can you harness the power of the Butterfly Effect, take full advantage of, be active players in its effect in our lives?

  • Challenge your routines: Wake up 15 minutes earlier, in fact 15 is not even small, say 5, just 5 mins earlier. Take a different route to work ( I don't know how this makes any difference though but hey BUTTERFLY!!!). These small shifts can introduce new experiences, spark new ideas, and open you up to unexpected encounters.
  • Embrace serendipity: Be open to unplanned detours, unexpected conversations, and chance encounters. Sometimes the most rewarding experiences come from the paths less traveled. In simple english 'Don't be scared'
  • Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to the present moment, to the small details that often go unnoticed (This in an important one actually). This increased awareness can help you recognise the subtle connections between seemingly unrelated events.

Remember, the Butterfly Effect isn't just about grand, life-altering events. It's about the everyday choices, the small acts of kindness, the fleeting moments of inspiration that shape the tapestry of our lives. So, go forth and flap your wings, my butterflies. You never know where it might lead.

Flap! Flap! Because This is what we do Now.

Day 86: Branding

Let's talk about something that's often misunderstood. When I say "branding," what pops into your head? Probably corporations with their fancy logos, catchy slogans, and those adverts that somehow know exactly when you're most vulnerable to buying another appliance you don't need. But here's the thing... branding isn't just for businesses trying to sell you overpriced coffee in minimalist cups. It's actually something far more personal and potentially transformative than we give it credit for. What Even Is Personal Branding Anyway? Think about the first human "brand" if you will. Back in Genesis, God essentially gave Adam a personal brand: "caretaker of Eden." Simple job description, decent benefits package, minimal dress code. One rule to follow. And then... well, we know how that ended up. The serpent came along and essentially offered a "brand upgrade", "You will be like God, knowing good and evil" (Ge...

Day 77: Add Value

We've all heard some version of it, haven't we? "You reap what you sow." "Give and you shall receive." Those timeless principles packaged and repackaged across centuries, religions, and TED talks all essentially saying the same bloody thing: value out follows value in. But let's be honest, shall we? In our swipe-right, instant-gratification culture, the patience required for genuine value creation feels almost... quaint. The Great Value Misconception (Or Why Everyone's Waiting for Their Ship That Never Bloody Sails) I was reminded of that brilliant exchange from "The Wolf of Wall Street" between Matthew McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio: Mark Hanna: "You know what a fugazi is?" Jordan Belfort: "Fugazi... it's a fake." Mark Hanna: "Fugazi, fugazi. It's a whazy. It's a woozie. It's fairy dust." That's what most people's understanding of "adding value" is fairy dust. They bel...

Day 71: When Life Gives You Lemons

We've all heard it, haven't we? That saccharine platitude: "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." It's slapped onto mugs, embroidered onto pillows, and plastered across Instagram feeds by people who've likely never faced a proper lemon-level catastrophe in their lives. I was reminded of an exchange fictional, but bloody brilliant between Roderick Usher and C. Auguste Dupin in the series fall of the house of Usher: Roderick Usher: "When life hands you lemons..." C. Auguste Dupin: "Make lemonade?" Roderick Usher: "No. First you roll out a multi-media campaign to convince people lemons are incredibly scarce, which only works if you stockpile lemons, control the supply, then a media blitz. Lemon is the only way to say 'I love you,' the must-have accessory for engagements or anniversaries. Roses are out, lemons are in. Billboards that say she won't have sex with you unless you got lemons. You cut De Beers in on it. ...
